If you haven't tested your computer for Y2K compliance yet, it is absolutely essential that you do so. Go the home site of your software and hardware and make sure there is a statement to the effect that your model and version is compliant or how to make it so. The microsoft site is http://www.microsoft.com/y2k . Other vendors should have similar sites set up. Do you have a Mac? It's probably compliant but check it out anyway. Remeber to check out all your software not just your operating system.

So what's going to happen January 1? Will planes crash from the sky and life as we know it cease to exist? I don't think so but the thing is that no one is really sure. The problems that have already surfaced, notably the Maine horseless carriage
(see http://www.y2k-links.com/garynorth/6486.htm ) and others, point out that while people have been working very hard to make sure that everything will be alright they can't get everything.

I think the be-prepared-for-a-natual-disaster advice is good no matter what happens. Stock up for an extended weekend and make sure you have batteries for your flashlight.

You may want to turn off your computer before midnight on the 31 st and leave it off til the second. That probably won't help anything but it might circumvent any viruses waiting for the January 1, 2000 date to come alive. Be sure to back up any important files.

What's going to happen on January 1? Beat's me, I plan to sleep late.
