Site navigation can be tricky thing sometimes. The most important thing to remember is to make sure that the page are linked together in an orderly fashion. To link all your pages to all your other pages just doesn't work after your site grows beyond 10 or 12 pages. Start looking for sections for your site. Put pages under the most logical sections. It makes little sense to put pictures of your children in the same section as the product you are trying to sell, but they fit perfectly under the heading "about me".
It's often a good idea to include a site map with larger sites. That is a page devoted solely to a listing of the site, it's pages and how they are organized. This may help visitors to your site find exactly the page for which they are looking and it will better help you to see possible flaws in the site.
The graphics used are up to you whether they are buttons to go with the theme of your page or simply text links. The most important thing is to be logical.
